Despite the evidence from all over the globe that the smartest and cheapest way to solve many of the problems facing Australia at the moment - city congestion, health issues, keeping our cities liveable - is by making bike riding a practical and accesible means of transport, the Victorian state government has decided not to support bicyle infrastructure with any funding in their latest budget. That's right, they've allocated exactly zero monies for buildng the cheapest form of infrastructure for easing city congestion.
Many BUGs and other interested groups have banded together to organise a rally to protest the lack of investment in bike infrstructure. If you're wondering just why you have to put up with dangerous conditions on your ride to work, why it isn't safe enough for your kids to ride to school or why doing the shopping on your bike isn't safe, then maybe you should get along Thursday June 21st between 7:30-8:30am to Parliament House in Spring St.
Melbourne BUG have a fabulous web site with masses of information about the rally as well as a list of meeting points on all sides of the city from which you can ride in, if you're looking for company. Be annoyed and be there!
