When it comes to the zen of bicycles one Melbourne bike recycler has found inspiration in Budhist roots.
Mottainai, a term traditionally used by Budhists to express regret at the waste of the sacred, is also the name of Cameron Trethowan's thriving bicycle recycling business. With an artist's appreciation for the lines of vintage bicycles and their components Cameron recycles old bikes with minimal waste and maximum re-use as the cornerstones of his philosophy. In keeping with this their normal abode bears more resemblance to the average well-loved bike shed than any other bike retail space you've seen
Normally housed at the rear of the Rose Street Artist Market in Melbourne, you can also find Mottainai in their pop-up at the cnr of Napier and Johnston Sts in Fitzroy. In addition to restoring bikes for sale, they also carry out repairs and services on your existing bicycle. Especially handy if you have an older bike and are searching for replacement parts!
Check their blog for photos of customers who've found their soul mates as well as opening hours at both locations.
